WSDM 1.1 in Public Review Status Now

March 29th, 2006

Whewww,

What a load of work I’ve had being the editor of the OASIS WSDM MUWS 1.1 specification. It’s been a long time coming. Honestly, when I signed up for it, I didn’t realize how much work it would actually be. I’ve learned a lot of things about the experience. One of them is get in on the ground floor when doing standards and specifications because picking it up in the middle of the process is quite hard! Hard for understanding where the standard lies vs. where it needs to be. I was pulling my hair out by the end. I had way too many technical difficulties with Word (doesn’t like really large documents with lots of changes); depsite the fact that I’ve used it for nearly 17 years.

On a more upbeat note, I’ve found it to be quite rewarding. Learning the intricacies of creating standards and specifications has been very positive for me. It’s one experience that I think helped me grow professionally.

Anyway, enough of my complaining. The specifications are now for public review and can be downloaded from this page, as well as the OASIS-OPEN.ORG/wsdm website.

Latest Report on MacBook Pro

March 29th, 2006

Well, let’s see here. I’ve had the MacBook Pro for a month and a half now. It’s doing better than well. Although it does get hot after using it a long time, it still seems to operate quite efficiently. Some applications work well, some don’t. I guess its due to the Universal vs. Non-Universal binary differences.

Anyway, if you are thinking about buying one; I highly recommend it. They are a bit pricey, but I’m sure my total cost of ownership will be cheaper long-term. I’m also switching over slowly from a hybrid work architecture (using PCs and Macs) to using just Mac. I don’t think that will ever be 100%; but I can aspire towards that goal.
